Week 3- Starting Off: Foundation

Welcome to Week 3 of The Starting Off project (#theSOproject) and the category for this week is Foundation. I am very much a dedicated Foundation user :) So lets begin…

What are Foundations?
Foundations are a skin-toned cosmetic which acts some what like a canvas for the rest of your make up. When applied to the skin, foundations should blend in nicely with your skin to provide an even, flawless coverage of the face masking areas of imperfection. Ultimately, foundations are used to improve the appearance, tone and texture of the skin.

Types of Foundations
Foundations can take various forms including, liquid forms in tubes, cream forms in compact cases as well as mousse forms in little containers. Mousse foundations are basically liquid foundation with air whipped into it.

It would be best to use a foundation that contains Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to protect your skin from damage in the sun.

There are different categories of foundations designed for particular skin types.

These include but not limited to the following:
1)
Oil-free foundations (Matte Finish)
These are ideal for those who have oily skin to help with controlling/limiting the appearance of shine. It should provide a nice even, matte finish.

Since I have combination skin, I like Oil-free foundations and find them best suited to my skin type.

An example would be The Body Shop Oil Free Balancing Foundation with SPF 15.
This is one of my favourite foundations! It is very easy to apply and blends nicely with the tone of my skin providing the appearance of healthier, brighter looking skin.

I would say that it provides a medium to full coverage which helps with covering certain imperfections and evens out the tone as well as texture of the skin.

2)
Moisturising Foundations (Semi Matte/ Dewy Finish)
This is ideal for those who have normal to dry skin.
It hydrates the skin and provides a more satin finish.

I have done a bit of research for you my beautiful readers. I have found that Laura Mercier does a moisturising foundation. Please click here if you would like to check it out.

3)
Tinted Moisturiser
I thought I would also include the addition of this category.
This summer I have found that switching my foundation with a Blemish Balm (BB) cream has really helped in preventing my skin from getting too oily and ultimately controlling shine with the added bonus of moisturising my skin.
These are also great for those days where your skin does not require as much coverage.

This summer I have been using Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-In-One BB cream.

Current Favourite(s)
As well as the Body Shop foundation featured above, I have also been using the No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation and really like it.
It comes in a sleek tube packaging with a pump.
It also contains SPF 15 and provides my skin with a nice smooth, natural finish.
I would say that it gives medium coverage.

When I wear this foundation I do not really have a fear of my makeup melting throughout the course of the day!

Application
1)
Remember to wash your face and moisturise your skin

2)
Miscellaneous step(s)
Apply primer for longer lasting makeup.
Apply concealer to cover dark circles, redness, discolouration and other blemishes as well as even out skin tone and brighten up the face.

Click here to read more about my take on Concealers which was covered in last weeks post for The SO Project.

If you do not use primer, you can leave this step and go straight to applying your foundation

3)
Foundations can be applied using a sponge, brush or your fingers.
I normally dot the product on my forehead, cheeks, chin and a slightly on my nose.
I then blend the product gently in a circular, upward motion.

4)
Set your makeup using the powder of your choice.
I like to set my foundation for a more matte finish.

Tips
Remember- Less is More!
Choose a shade that best matches with your skin tone and try not to apply excessive amounts of foundation. Otherwise, this will make the skin appear cakey and simply look like you are wearing too many layers of makeup.
It would also then be difficult to make the tone of your neck and face match!

There are many, many different types of foundations. As you can see there are some which give a matte finish whilst others provide a dewy finish. These little beauties also come in different forms, shapes and sizes as well as different consistencies from liquid to mousse to pressed powder foundations.

Getting the right foundation for your skin type will provide you with a better experience and skin appearance.

Depending on your skin type, be sure to check out the foundations by swatching them or reading more about it before committing.

I hope this was helpful. Good luck with your search for the right foundation!

Would love to hear about your favourites… feel free to leave a comment :)
